Hypnosis for pain

We all know pain, whether from an injury or illness.

A natural signal from the body to protect us.

But some pain persists. Other pain arises without any clear reason.

When the pain can no longer be explained, hypnosis can help find the cause behind it.

Pain that doctors cannot explain

There are three types of pain:

  • Pain from an injury or illness. Typically, the body heals over time and the pain disappears.
  • Nerve-related pain. This may be caused by irritation or damage in the nervous system, and the pain can often be identified through symptoms and examinations.
  • Pain without any clear physical cause. Doctors cannot explain the pain based on scans or blood tests. However, the pain is real and can significantly affect everyday life.

It is this type of pain – “without a clear cause” – that we can work with using hypnosis. We often identify the underlying patterns, which allows us to reduce, and in some cases eliminate, the pain.

More than 100,000 people in Denmark live with pain that cannot be explained

When pain persists over time, many people undergo a series of examinations to find a physical cause.

Unfortunately, it often happens that the results from scans and tests do not explain the pain.

Instead, many end up with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

A diagnosis that can create great frustration and raise new questions.

When a doctor arrives at a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, the situation is typically:

  • The pain has lasted for at least 3 months
  • Tests and scans cannot explain the pain
  • The pain is present in multiple areas of the body
  • Fatigue and poor sleep are often part of the picture

But what does it actually mean when the pain is there – without any physical explanation?

Is the pain really “without a cause”?

Historically, illnesses have been explained from a physical perspective. If no injury or disease could be found in the body, there was often no explanation.

In 1977, the American psychiatrist George L. Engel introduced a broader understanding, now known as the biopsychosocial approach.

Here, illness is understood as an interaction between biological, psychological and social factors.

This means that pain is not only about the physical body, but also about how we think, respond and live our lives in interaction with others.

From this perspective, pain does not arise “without a cause.” There is always a reason — it is simply not visible on a scan or in a blood test.

The biopsychosocial model is today a central and widely accepted approach in healthcare.

However, in practice, the focus is still on what can be measured and documented. When tests and scans cannot explain the pain, there is rarely time to explore what else might be causing it.

This means that many people are left with a diagnosis — without any real understanding of why the pain occurs or what can change it.

Here, hypnosis can be an alternative approach. Many people with fibromyalgia have experienced that hypnosis has helped reduce their pain.

With hypnosis, we work with the patterns and responses that may lie behind the pain. This can be how the body reacts to certain situations, stress or past experiences.

When these patterns change, many people experience that the pain is reduced and, in some cases, disappears.

A safe and calm process

I set aside 90 minutes for a session, so there is plenty of time. You should set aside up to 2 hours, in case we run a little over.

We begin with a conversation where we first ensure that your pain has been assessed by a doctor.

The hypnosis itself is a collaboration between you and me. During hypnosis, you will be in a very relaxed state. You remain awake, aware, and in full control at all times.

When we work with pain, it is not about “forcing” anything away.

When we understand what lies behind the pain, we can change the way the body reacts.

During hypnosis, you will typically experience a deep sense of calm in the body. This is where we work with the patterns and responses that help maintain the pain.

After the session, we talk about your experience and how you can continue working with what we have started.

How many sessions do I need?

F

A treatment for chronic pain is typically short. As a starting point, I recommend 5 sessions.

Throughout the process, I expect that you will notice ongoing improvements — and we will of course evaluate your progress along the way.

My experience

My experience is that your openness to the process is crucial for the outcome.

Pain is often experienced as something tangible and impersonal. But our work lies in what reveals itself along the way.

It is often very personal and may be connected to past experiences, as well as your patterns of behaviour and values.

So if you are motivated to reduce your pain and at the same time gain an understanding of what lies behind it, there is a good chance that we will reach your goal.
